What is an MOT?

The MOT scheme is really a government based road safety initiative designed to ensure wherever possible that all cars, motorcycles and light goods vehicles which are more than 3 years old.

  • are maintained to a certain standard and;
  • are tested and examined at least once a year are by an authorised MOT test station which will be approved by the Vehicle and Operator Service Agency (VOSA) to make certain that they comply with important requirements of the law

MOT stands for ‘Ministry Of Transport’. Although the Ministry of Transport is no longer, the MOT name has remained in place.

Remember- the MOT test certificate relates only to the condition of the testable items and the vehicle’s condition at the time of the test. It shouldn't be seen as evidence of its condition at any other time; nor should it be regarded as evidence of the overall mechanical condition of the vehicle.

When is my car eligible for its first MOT?

Your car is eligible for an MOT test when the vehicle is three (3) years old. Please remember to bring your Vehicle Registration Document (V5) when you bring your car in for MOT.

What happens if my vehicle fails the MOT Test?

Should the vehicle fail, we will issue you with a VT3O Certificate. This certificate lists the items which caused the failure of the MOT test. We’ll make it clear to you what work needs to be done for a pass to be issued to you. In some instances expert or special services may be required regarding emissions or welding and we'll make recommendations to you should these be necessary.

There is no set time limit before a retest needs to be done and it is totally at the discretion of the individual. However, it’s important to remember that a car that does not have a current MOT Certificate can't be used on the road, except if travelling to a garage for repairs or an MOT test

I have lost my MOT certificate, what can I do?

You can get a duplicate certificate – If you had your MOT test done here then just call us and we will send you another one out. Otherwise, go back to the garage where the vehicle was tested, tell them the approximate date of the test and they should be able to give you a duplicate certificate. Either way, there is a small fee to pay.

If you do not have the details of the garage where the MOT was done, perhaps because you have just bought the car, try The Vehicle Inspectorate (0845 600 5977) who may be able to help.
